What is Neck Pain?
Over Utilized Vs. Under Utilized Muuscles
When it comes to chronic neck pain—especially for individuals spending long hours at a desk—the root cause is often a biomechanical tug-of-war known as Upper Crossed Syndrome or a muscle imbalance cycle.
How do we assess neck pain at Tam physio & Rehab Clinic?
Posture Analysis
The human head weighs approximately 10 to 12 pounds in a neutral alignment. When the spine is properly stacked, the bones, ligaments, and deep stabilizing muscles effortlessly support this weight. However, when poor posture—such as slumping over a desk or leaning forward—takes over, the head shifts ahead of the body's center of gravity. For every inch the head protrudes forward, its effective weight on the cervical spine increases exponentially: 1 Inch Forward: approx 20 pounds of pressure on the neck.2 Inches Forward: approx 30 pounds of pressure.3 Inches Forward: approx 40 pounds of pressure.

Spurling Test
When downward pressure on the top of the head causes pain, numbness, or tingling that radiates down the arm while the patient's neck is extended and tilted, this is known as a positive Spurling test. This is a sign of pinched nerve, or nerve root compression in the cervical spine, which is frequently brought on by foraminal stenosis or a herniated disc.Your healthcare provider turns your head to the side that is afflicted, tilts it lower and backward, and applies light pressure towords down. The test considered Positive : The side of your head that is tilted causes pain, tingling, or weakness to shoot down your arm or shoulder. What It Means: You probably have cervical radiculopathy, which is a condition in which a nerve root in your neck is pinched or inflamed as it leaves the spinal column. In this case you will be reffred to the Nuurologist who assess your condtion and request additional tests like MRI to rule out further.

Cervical Traction Test
The purpose of the cervical traction test, also known as the cervical distraction test, is to ascertain whether your arm pain, numbness, or tingling is due to cervical radiculopathy, a pinched nerve in your neck. By removing the physical weight of your head from your neck and separating the vertebrae, the test assists your therapist in determining the cause of your symptoms:How it operates The therapist uses a gradual, steady pulling force (traction) to lengthen your neck while you lie on your back with your head comfortably cradled.A "Positive" Test: The test is successful if the mild tug soothes or lessens your well-known radiating arm or shoulder symptoms.

Cervical Spondylosis: The Modern "Tech Neck" Epidemic
Once considered an age-related wear-and-tear condition of the neck (cervical spine), cervical spondylosis is now striking a younger population. While it traditionally begins in our 30s and 40s, healthcare providers are increasingly diagnosing it in young adults—and our digital lifestyles are a significant contributor.
This shift isn't coincidental. It’s a gift of the high-tech era. From childhood, we cradle smartphones, hunch over laptops, and spend hours gaming or scrolling. This constant "forward head posture" places immense, repetitive strain on the cervical spine—discs, joints, ligaments, and muscles—accelerating degenerative changes years before their time.
Don't Let Neck Pain Control Your Life
Clinical Features: How Does "Tech Neck" Feel?
The symptoms often creep in subtly and are frequently mistaken for simple stress or tiredness. Be alert to these signs:Neck Pain & Stiffness: Aching, sometimes sharp pain in the neck or the base of the skull. Stiffness is often worse in the morning or after prolonged static postures.Referred Pain: Pain that radiates to the shoulders, between the shoulder blades, and even up to the head (causing tension-type headaches).Muscle Weakness & Numbness: If nerve roots are compressed, it can cause tingling, numbness, or weakness in the arms, hands, or fingers.Reduced Range of Motion: Difficulty turning the head fully or looking up and down without pain.
· A Grating Sensation: A feeling or sound of “crunching” or “grinding” (crepitus) with neck movement.
